Business-savvy driver's process suggestions help company save hours


How Jerry Carpenter became one of this company's most instrumental team members – despite not being on the official payroll.

Over the years, Chicago-based general contracting company F.H. Paschen has grown and changed locations. But despite these big changes, one aspect of the business has remained the same: the unwavering support from their UPS driver, Jerry Carpenter, who has been handling their deliveries for more than 15 years.

Paschen tackles jobs ranging from $10,000 renovation projects to $100 million government contracts. All the while, Paschen depends on UPS – and Carpenter – to keep business running smoothly.

"Jerry's help has been tremendous," says Ellen Gniadecki, Paschen's senior office manager. "From helping us estimate [delivery dates] to the payroll department, it's made a huge difference to have him right here on-site. He gets me in touch with the right people."

Impactful payroll suggestion saves time and money

Carpenter doesn't just pick up and drop off packages. He pinpoints challenges that the staff faces and suggests solutions.

Gniadecki cites one example. "In our industry, we do a lot of late shipments and we would have to personally take them to the UPS drop box or station so we could meet our deadline," she says. "He's waited. If somebody really wants to get a package out, he gives us a few minutes. He straightens out his truck in order to help us get that last package out there."

Carpenter noticed how employees were rushing around at the end of the day, struggling to get their packages ready for his pickup. So when Paschen moved to its new location, he had an idea.

He recalled a UPS Drop Box had been removed at that location when the previous tenant closed. He put in a request with his manager to have the drop box reinstalled, giving the Paschen employees extra time to prepare their packages later in the day without having to bring them to a UPS location.

"Jerry was instrumental in helping us get a UPS box at our corporate headquarters with a 7 p.m. pickup," Gniadecki says. "This was crucial for delivering payroll to our jobsites across the country, as well as for our other important documents."

Consistency despite change

When Paschen changed locations, the staff members hoped that Carpenter would be able to keep them on his route.

"We came from a different location a mile away and we weren't sure he would be able to follow us," says Gniadecki. "When he did, we were really happy. He's been with us a long time."

Carpenter was glad to keep Paschen on his route. "It could have gone to someone else, but I wanted to hang onto it. It's a great company."

"We have loads of packages coming and going each day," says Gniadecki. "Jerry handles each one with the greatest sense of professionalism. He truly goes above and beyond daily with his kindness, reliability, friendliness and patience! He works so hard to make sure all packages are delivered and picked up efficiently."

A long-standing legacy of delivery

Carpenter, 47, started working for UPS after high school. "I was a driver's helper one year and the next year I came back and got hired as a driver for Christmas," he says. "After Christmas they needed more drivers so they kept me. That was in 1988 and here I am!"

Carpenter lives in Joliet, Ill., about an hour away from his UPS hub, with his wife and their 17-year-old daughter.

Gniadecki, for one, is happy he's willing to make the commute for his job at UPS. "It is not just one thing Jerry does, it's everything he does so quietly, selflessly, efficiently and continuously. I'm really grateful for his efforts," she says.
