With a business to run, the last thing you need to worry about is packages that don't make it to anxious customers. Here's the three-step Compass Online guide to minimizing package problems and, if the unexpected happens, handling problems efficiently.

1. Packaging: Self-defense for your precious cargo
The new UPS Packaging Advisor is an online tool that takes the guesswork out of packing. It helps you determine just what you need* to ship any item safely by walking you through industry guidelines.

Or, try these general packaging guidelines that will help you prepare your package for shipping.

You can also follow these step-by-step guidelines on how to prepare for shipping.

If your company faces packaging challenges on a larger scale, you might seek advice from the engineers at UPS's Package Design and Testing Laboratory. With their state-of-the-art facilities and expertise, their input can help you prevent damages from occurring, improve profitability, enhance customer satisfaction, increase productivity and minimize the environmental impact of your shipping operation.

2. Destination address: Get it right, and we’ll get it there
UPS shipping systems automatically validate city, state and ZIP Code combinations within the United States, but they can also validate addresses in detail, at street level. This additional option – called detailed address validation – is enabled by default in UPS shipping systems. We recommend that you leave it enabled.

Also, be sure to know whether your destination address is residential or commercial, and save yourself a billing adjustment. Here’s how UPS can help you determine this before you ship.

If your order fulfillment process involves retyping a customer-supplied address, then you may be at risk of introducing errors. Instead, why not put UPS technology integration to work and link a shipping system such as UPS WorldShip® to your back-office systems? In addition to increasing accuracy, linking systems can bring about significant efficiencies that could benefit your business.

3. If the unexpected happens: Deal with it on your terms … online
You're busy enough during your working day taking care of business. So it's good to know that you can take care of claims whenever it suits you, online, 24/7.

In most cases, the online claims process will allow you to resolve the matter in a single interaction. You can continue taking care of your business while we look into your problem.

Our online claims system can be accessed at ups.com/claims.

*UPS's packaging guidelines are recommendations to assist you in packaging your shipment. Following these guidelines is not a guarantee that an item is sufficiently packaged for transportation.
