My package of baby formula tracking # says its out for delivery all day. When does ups stop delivering for the night??

Heather: Delivery stops for the day only when a driver's package car is empty. Regards, Compass Guy

    De 12/23/2014 8:00:10 PM
I have three packages that where "out for delivery" scanned in my town yesterday morning only to later receive emails saying there was a delay. I have another package that has been scanned as our for delivery for today... What situation would there be a delay in delivery after the package is already on the truck unless they simply forgot about me? I've been canceling appointments to stay home and wait as these are Christmas presents and I paid extra to get them here in time and now it seems like they won't be here in time. :/

    Compass Guy 12/24/2014 10:17:39 AM
De, usually when the package tracking system says the package is "out for delivery," the package is indeed delivered that day. I suspect the driver did not forget about you, but it could be that the volume has been so heavy that not all the packages were delivered like they normally would be. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please keep tracking the packages in question or contact 1-800-PICK-UPS. Have the tracking numbers handy as that will be the first thing you are asked to provide.

I have two overnight packages today, Feb 17th from California 92647 to go to a racetracks in Cecil, Georgia 31627 and Bradenton, FL 34212. Will they be delivered on time?

    Compass Guy 2/17/2015 2:29:07 PM
Fran, the only way to tell for sure is to track the packages at It is possible they will be delayed by weather due to late airplanes in the nation's midsection. It's not the weather in the origin or destinations, but in between.

    jessica 3/5/2015 2:26:23 PM
I have tickets to be delivered for me for an event on Wednesday march 11th 2015, the tracking says there is a delay at the moment due to weather. Will i get my packages on time? Or is there something I can change in order to receive them?

    Compass Guy 3/6/2015 8:20:21 AM
Jessica, I would call 1-800-PICK-UPS and have your tracking number handy. The customer service rep may be able to see the progress the package has made.

    larry 3/6/2015 1:04:08 PM
I have a package to go next day air from Los Angeles to Oregon. Will weather back east delay this. Not sure if it goes to main hub or stays out here.

    Compass Guy 3/6/2015 4:23:47 PM
Larry, although I'm not privy to the routing plan for Next Day Air packages, my suspicion is the package wouldn't be sent east where the weather problems have affected the system. When weather is an issue, the network planners reroute to avoid problem areas whenever possible. Although Louisville is the largest, we have multiple air hubs, including one near Los Angeles.

    Andrew 11/5/2015 9:36:54 AM
I have a package overnight to Laramie, Wy. Despite the package being in Denver and the roads to Laramie are open, UPS' tracking site shows it has been delayed an entire day. Does UPS usually give up on priority shipping like this?

    Compass Guy 11/5/2015 10:34:13 AM
Andrew, I would contact UPS Customer Service for more details on the weather issue ( I can tell you that our drivers leave UPS in the morning and typically don't arrive back until evening. So, if a plane was late and the package arrived at the UPS hub during the day, it would likely be until the following day before it was out for delivery.

does ups deliver on weekends (saturdays)?

      Michael C 12/5/2012 5:22:54 PM
Yea, Hi. My girlfriend is located in KY and she was supposed to have a package delivered to her today on 12/5/2012 and she has not yet recieved it. We both have checked the tracking info and at first it told us that is was "in transit schedualed for delivery today" now it is saying "On vehical for delivery". A: What is the cut off time for deliveries? and B: why has it been taking so long? The last scan was in Cinncinatti, OH, which is about 40 minutes from her location in KY. It's supposed to be 'Guarenteed by 12/5" Why hasn't she revieved her package yet?

Hi, if I have a shipment arriving from an order, an sent via Ground w/ tracking number, but will take too long am I able to upgrade it to next day air or 2day shipping?

      Compass Guy 10/15/2014 9:07:35 AM
Hatim, no, you can't upgrade the package. But the shipper could intercept that package (and have it returned to them) and they could send you a replacement package via Next Day Air or 2nd Day Air. That's all I can think of to get the item there in time.

      Chris Nicolas 3/22/2015 9:46:15 AM
My package is being sent from NY to CA and it's status has been "Picked Up" for about 5 days. It is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow (Monday) but it still has not been updated to "In Transit". Should I be worried?

      Compass Guy 3/23/2015 9:19:45 AM
Chris, I would be concerned. If it doesn't say "out for delivery" when you track it today, and today is the day it's supposed to get to its destination, I would call 1-800-PICK-UPS. Have the tracking number handy as that'll be the first thing you'll need to enter.

      keee 4/24/2015 9:01:15 PM
I made a order online but I didn't receive a tracking number can I get my tracking number by useing my order number?

      Compass Guy 4/27/2015 8:55:06 AM
Keee, you might be able to get your UPS tracking number from the retailer using your order number, but the only way to use UPS Tracking is with the tracking number (that typically will begin with 1Z).

      Princess 5/14/2015 3:29:14 PM
If the sender shipped my package earlier in the morning would I have a tracking delivery status as apposed to being shipped later in the afternoon which states tracking is unavailable at this time? Does it make a difference in morning or afternoon shipping for tracking information?

      Compass Guy 5/14/2015 4:25:07 PM
If the shipper requested that UPS send a Quantum View Notify message to you, it should give you both the UPS tracking number and the expected delivery date. You won't see tracking progress, though, until the package is picked up by the UPS driver and scanned. Packages typically are picked up at the end of the day, so there won't be actual movement of your package until then. I hope that answers your question.

      Dave 5/29/2015 10:17:13 AM
my package says estimated delivery on monday june first. But the package is at the ups near my house. Can i just pick it up instead so that way i can have my package earlier?

      Compass Guy 6/1/2015 7:53:56 AM
Dave, no. Only packages that have been "held for pickup" can be retrieved at the UPS Customer Center because the clerk will only have access to those packages set aside for customer pickup. Sorry.

      Janell 6/11/2015 7:29:05 PM
The sender has sent my tracking number, but when I put the numbers in to track the package it says nothing can be found.. Is it possible they didn't send it yet? Or did they just give me the wrong tracking number?

      Compass Guy 6/12/2015 9:08:31 AM
Janell, I suspect it is the wrong tracking number because if the package was processed and a tracking number was generated, it would be in the system. Even if the package hadn't been picked up. It would say "ready for UPS pickup" or something close to that.

    • Will UPS leave my packages outside my apartment door?

I live in an apartment and work during the day. How can I get the UPS driver to leave my packages outside my door?

Your driver's primary concern is that your package reaches you safely. In many cases, your driver cannot leave packages in high-traffic areas. In addition, many shippers require an adult signature before a driver can release a shipment. The UPS Expert has his online shopping purchases delivered to his workplace for this very reason. We recommend having your packages shipped to a destination where there is someone available to sign for them. Alternatively, The UPS Store® provides mailbox and package receiving services.

We live on a very rural farm, behind a key coded entry gate. Our driver has the code to let himself in, but refuses to leave our shipments inside the gate. This is a secure location and the shipments do not require a signature. for release. It is a 1/4 mile drive to the house and he also refuses to drive to the house after it rains. But he will call and ask someone to meet him at the gate on rainy days...........

          Compass Guy 12/17/2014 7:57:10 AM
Carol, no, many packages are left as "driver release" at residences. Exceptions include multifamily buildings and when the shipper requests a signature. The driver can't just leave the package in those cases.

What determines the use of rail intermodal

          Compass Guy 12/18/2014 9:53:30 AM
Steve, I'm not an operations expert, but I believe we use rail to transport ground packages across long distances, say Chicago to California. There are no doubt many different factors in determining the mode, so it's not an absolute that all long-distance ground moves by rail. Our operations experts choose the best method to make the delivery commitment for each package.

Do gated communities affect UPS Drivers where they might not deliver your package to your home?

          Compass Guy 5/5/2015 8:06:18 AM
Patt, it probably has happened where a driver couldn't access a home in a gated community, but typically the drivers are able to deliver in any residential neighborhood. If you have a delivery issue, though, please call 1-800-PICK-UPS and speak to a customer service agent.

The driver typically obtains a signature at a business unless the shipper selects Shipper Release.

        • Is this shipment residential or commercial?

I need to send a package to a customer who works from home. Will the delivery be classified as residential or commercial?

Good question, and one we often receive. Here's the rule: A residential location refers to a home, including a business operating out of a home.

I have a problem with this description of what is considered residential. You have changed it recently so that it doesn't matter if we are shipping to a building that may have been a residence 40 years ago and a business has been operating there for many years, you still want to consider it residential. I think this is unfair. We ship mainly to law firms and UPS is putting a price adjustment on many of these.

          Carolina Sammartino 11/9/2012 6:57:45 PM
We have the same problem. A UPS rep once informed us that Residential and Commercial areas are determined by how the location is zoned for tax purposes, but who knows that?? even the recipient doesn't know the difference. The rep also suggested us to check on Google Maps to see what is nearby the delivery address such as buildings, shops, houses, etc. and this would give us an idea as to if the delivery address is within a residential area or not, but when we sent a package to a hotel in the busy-and-full-of-businesses 7th Street of Manhattan, NY, it was considered "residential" and we were billed for that. Should we have to hit the Residential box for every shipment just in case?

The Compass Guy 11/19/2012 10:42:48 AM
Carolina: Sorry for any confusion on this subject. The standard rule is this: A residential delivery goes to a home, including a business operating out of a home. However, a commercial delivery goes to a business. Here is the link for an article that goes into more depth on this subject: Regards, The Compass Guy

          Jane 1/15/2015 1:55:58 PM
It isn't true that if an office is in a home it is considered residential. I ship often to Myrtle Beach SC and to one of the many hotels that has been there for years and UPS always charges for residential even though there are miles of hotels, not condo but hotels. They charge what they want to. I have read all the guide lines and get upset every time. On of the hotels even said they pay business taxes they should be considered commercial instead of residential. I use another carrier now when I have to ship to this city. After 15 years I just give up.

How do I get the UPS drivers to deliver to my front door instead of the garage door? We have had them deliver perishable food after 9:00PM at the garage door.

How many attempts do you guys make to deliver before giving up? I missed my first delivery :/

            Daniel 11/4/2015 12:52:20 AM
Oh and If I miss my first delivery does it come again the next day at around the same time?

            Compass Guy 11/4/2015 8:39:14 AM
Joseph Dale, sorry you have been waiting so long for your package to arrive. Usually if the tracking system says it is "Out for Delivery," then it is delivered that day. At 11:45 p.m., it would not arrive until the following day. It may have been placed on the delivery truck late at night, but the vehicles won't leave UPS until the following morning.

            Compass Guy 11/4/2015 8:42:03 AM
Israel, sorry you are having delivery issues. Usually by 8:10 p.m., all packages have been delivered. If you have the tracking number, contact UPS Customer Service via phone, e-mail or live chat, and a rep can probably figure out when the package is going to arrive. is a good place to start.

            Compass Guy 11/4/2015 8:44:49 AM
Daniel, most times there are three delivery attempts on successive business days (so never on Saturday or Sunday). It's hard for me to predict if it'll be the same time each day, but ground packages typically arrive to residences during afternoon hours. But the exact time will vary depending on the demands on the driver for that particular day.

          • How do I arrange a UPS pickup at my business?

I'm trying to figure out my pickup options. I don't think I need a daily pickup. Maybe three times a week or so. What would you suggest?

UPS Smart Pickup® might be your best option for flexibility, as your UPS driver won't make a pickup unless you have processed a shipment with a UPS system.
Some other options are Daily Pickup, which is exactly what it sounds like, and Day-Specific Pickup for the same days every week. And of course, UPS On-Call Pickup® service is available as you need a pickup.

          • What is Freight and what is LTL?

What's the difference between UPS Freight® and LTL?

LTL (less than a truckload) is a service that UPS Freight offers. It refers to freight loads that do not fill an entire truckload, any item weighing 150 pounds or more or a large bunch of packages all going to the same place. You can schedule it, process it and request a pickup just like with small packages.

          • Do you deliver next day by 8 a.m.?

If I need to get something overnight to someone by 8 a.m., is that possible?

Yes. UPS Next Day Air® Early provides guaranteed overnight delivery to major metropolitan areas within the contiguous 48 states as early as 8 a.m. That said, you should check the time/cost calculator at and enter the destination ZIP Code. Some areas receive Early A.M. packages by 8:30 a.m. or 9 a.m. Remote areas may not receive Early A.M. service, so it's always best to check.

            • How do I insure a package?

I need to ship irreplaceable antique sterling silverware to a customer. How do I protect the package?

Your protective instinct is sound. The first step is to package your customer's silverware with the utmost care (or have a packaging expert at any location of The UPS Store® do that for you). When processing your shipment, be sure to select an appropriate declared value for your silverware. Declared Value of up to $50,000 is available.

            • Can I upgrade the UPS service on a package that has shipped?

I sent a box to a customer via UPS Ground, but the shipment now needs to arrive sooner. Can I upgrade to overnight service?

You can't switch the service level once something has been shipped, but you're certainly not out of solutions. Request UPS Delivery Intercept® Service and send your customers their goods using a faster service such as UPS Next Day Air®. The intercepted package will come back to you, and, as long as you resend an identical shipment the same day, your customer's goods will arrive the next day. I need to upgrade my UPS Ground delivery but I was not the sender. I need the package before it is scheduled to be delivered. Is there anything I can do?

              Compass Guy 8/6/2012 2:02:10 PM
Shannon: How frustrating! And to answer your question, it's a yes and no. Yes, you can have a package rerouted for quicker delivery by doing a Delivery Intercept. However, the sender must be the one to make that call. --The Compass Guy

              Rick 8/15/2014 5:15:25 PM
Are you not responsible for your own service while in possession of the package? The receiver/purchaser of the package should be able to fast track it through the shipping service, unless the seller/sender has requested otherwise. This isn’t rocket science, I’m sure you’re already capable of adding such a service. You guys are leading the way in efficiency, but now lacking in fundamental customer service. How many others have complained regarding this issue? Are you just waiting for another company to offer it first? Let people upgrade their own shipping en route and end the madness already.

              Krista 9/25/2014 10:04:56 PM
I'll echo Rick on this one. From your 'About UPS' page: "Today, UPS is a global company with one of the most recognized and admired brands in the world. We have become the world's largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. Every day, we manage the flow of goods, funds, and information in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide" If you can do all this, you can let me upgrade to a faster service en-route. If it helps, this would make your company slightly more admirable.. in fact, I'd downright *adore* y'all :)

              Brian 10/2/2014 3:08:37 PM
You guys should consider letting the receiver intercept and upgrade the delivery. This would help greatly when dealing with online sellers who have a single shipping option.

i agree with rick and krista i recently ordered i firearm and of coure it has to go to the deaaler first but im only off weekends because of an extra day in proccessing and shipping i may have to wait a solid week longer to pick up my package simply because it wont be delivered on a saturday or sunday when im off work id pay extra to have it on saturday but im not allowed to change it now that it sent

              Ryan 12/16/2014 12:21:27 PM
Seriously, it's absurd that you can't just pay to change the shipping service. My package is now set to arrive after I leave town for two weeks, just because I can't change the shipping service to have it come a single day sooner.

              Randal Cummings 3/11/2015 7:57:41 PM
It seems the common sense consensus that a recipient should be able to upgrade their shipping status via some sort of intercept. It is possible I was told on the phone to upgrade a US postal ground package to UPS air, but no way to do the same to one of their ground packages. When I asked, "Why not?" the customer service rep said it is "not possible." I get from three to four packages a day mostly from Amazon which has a change shipping speed built into their order links. In this case I am expecting a guitar I ordered on Ebay from a private party. It has to come all the way from the East Coast and I would have happily paid for the upgrade expedite. Oh well, what can on do?

              John Calson 5/6/2015 5:02:22 PM
UPS is ignoring a lot of customers who need far more flexibility in shipping. Why in 2015 can we not call as the receiver and pay to have a package delivered faster? If you can intercept for the few reasons you provide certainly this most-requested option is badly overdue. The "no you can't do that" thinking is getting old.
